Why Grow Stevia? Rewarding for Experienced Growers
Stevia, stevia rebaudiana, is grown for its sweet leaves. Ideal for warmer climates (zones 8-11) or indoor cultivation in cooler zones, this perennial must be protected from frost. From 18 to 30 inches in height, it’s perfect for containers or in-ground plots.
Low Germination Rates
Natural stevia seeds have a low germination rate, around 10 to 40%. Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost at 75°F. Barely cover, as light aids germination. Seeds will sprout in 7-14 days under optimal conditions. Each pack contains 15-20 small seeds.
Easy to Grow, Low Maintenance
Once established, stevia is low-maintenance, heat-tolerant, and thrives in poor soil. Propagate more plants with cuttings.
Sustainable Living
A natural, low-carb alternative to artificial sweeteners and sugar, stevia can be used fresh, freeze-dried, dried, or made into an extract. Three to four teaspoons of finely ground powder can replace a cup of cane sugar, depending on taste. Harvest before blooming to minimize a bitter aftertaste.
